Jim Philip

Jim is a Partner and Co-Founder of Harbor View Advisors and has over 20 years of experience as an investment banker, entrepreneur, operating executive and board member.

Prior to founding Harbor View, Jim was President of Vurv Technology where he helped grow the company from $3 million in revenue to more than $40 million in just over three years, while managing Vurv’s evolution from a 30 employee, closely-held start-up to a dynamic, venture-backed company with more than 350 employees. During that time, Vurv became a global leader in the talent management market, providing software applications to streamline strategic human resources processes such as hiring and employee performance management.  As President, Jim’s role included raising $33 million of capital for the company from top-tier venture firms, management of operations and execution of three acquisitions and one divestiture. Jim was also a member of Vurv’s Board of Directors from 2003 until its sale to Taleo Corporation (Nasdaq: TLEO) in 2008.

Prior to joining Vurv, Jim was a Partner in the Investment Banking Group at Thomas Weisel Partners (TWP) in San Francisco. Jim joined TWP as one of its first employees and participated in the establishment and growth of the Internet, Business Services and Media investment banking groups. As an investment banker at TWP, Jim executed more than $5 billion in transactions including Mergers & Acquisitions, Initial Public Offerings, Private Placements of Debt and Equity and Follow-On Equity Offerings.

Prior to joining TWP, Jim worked as a senior investment banker for Montgomery Securities in San Francisco. Jim also worked as an M&A specialist for Financo (formerly a division of Lehman Brothers) and Dean Witter Reynolds in New York.

Jim currently serves on the Board of Directors of XSell, a leading CRM software company and Black Diamond Performance Reporting, a high-growth financial services technology company.  Jim also serves as Co-Chairman of Recover Gear, a sports-oriented consumer products company.

Jim holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Vanderbilt University with a double major in Mathematics and Economics, and a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) from Stanford University Graduate School of Business.
