HCM Q1 2026 Outlook: Fewer Deals, Bigger Bets

Highlights from the report:

  • Despite a slower start to 2026, AI continued to drive HCM dealmaking, remaining the dominant theme across roughly 100 M&A and VC transactions in the quarter.
  • HCM M&A activity varied across the three tracked segments:
    • Core HR represented half of the M&A transactions in Q1, as sponsor-backed and strategic buyers pushed deeper into payroll, benefits, and adjacent compensation capabilities.
    • Talent Acquisition activity was largely AI focused, with buyers gravitating toward platforms reimagining screening, assessment, sourcing, and interviewing.
    • Talent Management transactions focused on building unified employee experience platforms, with investment targeting solutions that connect hiring, development, and engagement through a single, data-driven layer.
  • Venture capital deal volume declined 50% as investors recalibrate around the AI imperative and innovators race to build the next generation of AI-native solutions. Funding continues to gravitate toward scaled category leaders, driving larger late-stage rounds and pushing average check sizes toward $70M.
  • Driving forces that will define HCM investment activity from here: Investors are backing fewer, bigger bets and focusing on where AI bridges the gap between disparate data and end user value, disrupting siloed workflows and point solutions. The winners will be scaled operators whose proprietary data and integrated workflows compound into insight advantages rivals can't catch.
